What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

An AI agent and a chatbot are not the same thing

A chatbot follows a fixed option tree and stalls when someone writes outside the script. An AI agent interprets natural language, consults the company knowledge base and performs actions in other systems — booking, order lookup, lead capture. In short, a chatbot replies and an agent resolves.

The difference in one conversation

A customer writes: “bought yesterday and nothing has arrived, it should have been here by now right”.

The chatbot looks for that phrase in its flow, finds nothing and replies with the menu: “Press 1 for Sales, 2 for Support”.

The AI agent understands this is about an order, identifies the customer, checks tracking, sees the package is in transit arriving tomorrow, and says exactly that — alongside the original delivery estimate, to address the implied complaint.

When a chatbot still wins

Short, closed, very high volume processes. Confirming attendance, choosing between three options, looking up one value. A fixed flow is cheaper to maintain and never surprises anyone — and predictability has value.

The common mistake

Hiring an AI agent for something that was a form. And the opposite, more expensive mistake: keeping a menu chatbot in an operation where customers write in plain language — every off-script message becomes a human ticket, and the automation saved nothing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot follows a pre-programmed flow of options and only understands what was anticipated. An AI agent interprets natural language, retrieves information from the company knowledge base and performs tasks in external systems. The chatbot answers inside the script; the agent resolves outside it.

Is a chatbot still useful?

Yes, and sometimes it is better. When the process is short, closed and high volume — pick one of three options, confirm attendance, look up a single value — a fixed flow is cheaper, faster and more predictable than an agent.

Can an AI agent invent answers?

It can, if configured badly. The protection is limiting the agent to the company knowledge base and instructing it to hand over to a human when the information is missing, rather than guessing. An agent that answers everything is an agent that eventually answers wrong.
